Viewing Recent Items in SLM

SLM recent items help users quickly return to records, objects, and links they have recently visited within Safety Lifecycle Manager. By keeping recently accessed items available from the left-hand menu, SLM recent items reduce navigation time and help users move efficiently between module-specific records.

This feature is especially useful when users are reviewing multiple objects, switching between modules, or returning to work they accessed earlier in the same area of the system.

What Are SLM Recent Items?

SLM recent items are links to records and objects a user has recently visited within the platform. These links appear in the left-hand menu, allowing users to quickly return to previously accessed information without manually navigating through the full object tree.

Recent items are module-specific. For example, items recently viewed in the HAZOP module are shown separately from items recently viewed in Instrumented Systems. This helps users stay focused on the records that are relevant to the module they are currently working in.

Faster Navigation Using SLM Recent Items

When users work across large process safety datasets, being able to return to recently viewed records can save time and reduce unnecessary clicks.

The Recent Items feature supports faster navigation by helping users:

  • Return to recently viewed objects
  • Access module-specific records
  • Reduce repeated searching
  • Move between related items more efficiently
  • Continue work from recently accessed areas

This works alongside the wider SLM Webviews and navigation tools that help users access and share information across the platform.

How the Left-Hand Menu Supports Workflow

Recent Items are presented in the left-hand menu and can be accessed by clicking the hotspot area of a recent item link.

This layout helps users avoid navigating back through multiple levels of the system when returning to information they have already opened.

Typical use cases include:

  • Returning to a recently viewed HAZOP record
  • Switching back to an Instrumented Systems object
  • Reviewing records used earlier in a workflow
  • Reopening items during audits or reviews
  • Continuing work after moving between modules

For users learning the SLM interface, related navigation features such as Using the Object Tree and Dashboard can also help explain how records are organized and accessed.

Why Recent Items Improve Usability

Recent item links provide a simple but valuable usability improvement for teams working with complex safety lifecycle information.

Key benefits include:

  • Less time spent searching for previously opened records
  • Faster access to frequently reviewed objects
  • Improved continuity during multi-step tasks
  • Better support for module-specific workflows
  • Reduced navigation friction for new and experienced users

This type of navigation support is valuable in process safety environments where users often move between records, reports, actions, and technical objects.

Good system navigation supports efficient access to safety-related information. The Health and Safety Executive COMAH guidance provides wider context on managing major accident hazard information and regulatory expectations.

Using Recent Items Step by Step

The Recent Items workflow is simple:

  1. Select the required module in SLM.
  2. Open the left-hand menu.
  3. Click the green arrow to show recent items.
  4. Review the list of the 10 most recently viewed items.
  5. Select the hyperlink for the item you want to reopen.

Because the list is module-specific, users can switch modules and see a different set of recently viewed records for that area of SLM.
