LOPA Conditional Modifiers
LOPA Conditional Modifiers are predefined probability values used during a Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA) to account for conditions that influence whether a hazardous consequence will occur. Standardising these values helps organisations perform more consistent risk assessments, reduce calculation errors and improve the quality of hazard studies.
Within SLM, conditional modifiers can be managed centrally at either the Enterprise or Site level and reused across multiple HAZOP and LOPA studies. This reduces facilitation time, ensures company-approved probability values are applied consistently, and improves the repeatability of risk calculations across different facilities.

What Are LOPA Conditional Modifiers?
LOPA Conditional Modifiers are predefined probability factors used during a Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA) to account for conditions that influence whether a hazardous consequence will occur after an initiating event. Configuring Conditional Modifier Libraries
SLM allows organisations to create libraries of approved conditional modifiers within the Global Module. Each modifier contains a name, description and predefined probability values that can later be applied to HAZOP and LOPA scenarios.
Conditional modifiers can be configured at either the Enterprise or Site level depending on how your organisation manages risk assessment standards.
- Enterprise level — use when all sites share the same approved probability values.
- Site level — use when individual facilities require their own conditional modifier values.
Enterprise libraries can also be synchronised with Site objects, making it easy to distribute approved conditional modifiers across multiple facilities while maintaining central governance.

Applying Conditional Modifiers During LOPA Studies
Once global conditional modifiers have been created, they can be applied directly within HAZOP and LOPA studies. Users simply select the appropriate scenario, review the available global modifiers and copy the required values into the current assessment.
This approach avoids manually recreating probability values while ensuring every facilitator uses approved company standards.

Enterprise-level configuration is appropriate when probability values are standard across all facilities. Site-level configuration provides flexibility where local operating conditions or company procedures require different values.
SLM also supports synchronising Enterprise libraries to individual Sites, helping organisations maintain consistency while allowing local administrators to manage approved data where appropriate.

To add conditional modifiers in the Global module, click on the Enterprise Oregon Site Objects Low per Conditional Modifiers tab and add Global Conditional Modifier.

To copy global conditional modifiers from the enterprise to be applied across all sites on the Enterprise level, click on Sync Across Sites.

In SLM, Conditional modifiers can be applied to scenarios in both the HAZOP and the LOPA module in a similar way.

To proceed, in the HAZOP module, navigate to the desired HAZOP study and node on the Facilitation tab, scroll to the Conditional Modifiers section in the scenario.

Click the Edit button to view a list of conditional modifiers for the scenario in the top section and conditional modifiers from the Global module in the bottom section.

Check all conditional modifiers to be applied to the scenario and under Custom Actions, click Copy Global Conditional Modifier.

Scrolling up shows that the new conditional modifier has been copied from below and is applied to the scenario to proceed in the local module, navigate to the Local module, expand the object tree to navigate to the desired local worksheet, and on the Applicable Values tab in the Initiating Courses section in the Custom Actions menu, click on Manage Conditional Modifiers, which will show a light box with the same information as mentioned previously in the Hazop module.

Once again, the top section being which conditional modifiers are part of the scenario and the bottom section being your conditional modifiers listed in the Global Conditional Modifiers section.

Check all conditional modifiers that apply and under the Custom Actions menu, click on Copy Global Conditional Modifier.
